Day 123 Natural laws

123:365
01/31/13
Day 123 Natural laws
Louise Hay affirmation:   “Change is the natural law of my life.  I welcome change.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Work with or be inspired by an eggshell.

Media:  Scrapbook paper, Magazine photos, Matte medium

Time:  1H

Comments:  Change means that some days require umbrellas, some days mean we have to walk on eggshells, and some days sparkle.  Hoping for more sparkle than umbrella or eggshell.  I welcome change.

Day 122 Musical choices

Day 122 Musical choices
Louise Hay affirmation:   “Today is a wonderful day.  I choose to make it so.  All is well in my world.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Make a working musical instrument.

Media:  Music paper, Magazine photos, Matte medium, Jewel bead, Watercolors

Time:   1H:10M

Comments:  I played around with the idea that the round stone-like ottoman at the bottom of the page is emitting its own music in the form of a solid, colorful, stringy blob.

The girl looking on "who never finished her music lessons" is from an advertisement in an old issue of The Etude Magazine, as is the music paper in the background.  She's chosen to make today a wonderful day by wearing a flower in her hair.

Day 121 Radiating rhythm

121:365
01/29/13

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I rejoice that I am in the rhythm and flow of my ever-changing life.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Do something with only tinfoil today.
Day 121 Radiating rhythm

Media:  Alumninum foil, Magazine photo, Glue stick, Mounting squares, Metallic Sharpie

Time:   50M

Comments:  In interior design work, and Art in general, the basic principles of design are generally regarded to be Balance, Rhythm, Harmony, Emphasis, Proportion and Scale.

The star shaped image on the right side of this collage is actually a magazine photo of a suspended Art piece hanging in a huge, open stairwell of a commercial building.

I liked the vibrant colors against the foil background, but also thought it was a good example of the use of radial rhythm – it creates movement of the eye by repeating shapes and colors at regular intervals.

Day 120 Clutter

Day 120 Clutter

120:365
01/28/13

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I am doing the best that I can.  Each day gets easier.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Make something in a box.

Media:  Scrapbook paper, Magazine  and Catalog photos, Matte medium. Glue stick, Zots,
Watercolors

Time:  1H:15M

CommentsThe right side of this collage looks somewhat like piles of clutter that multiply when I'm not looking.  No matter how I try to keep them clear, there are some spaces that accumulate boxes, piles of junk, and more junk.  How does that happen?

In numerology, the number 8 has to do with power and money on the earth plane.  I associate that with work and career, and with piles of mental and physical clutter too.  I'm doing the best that I can.  Still working on 'each day gets easier.'

Loved the linen wrapped boxes on the left side of the collage from Restoration Hardware.

Day 119 Flight of fancy

119:365
Day 119 Flight of fancy
01/27/13

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I approve of myself and the way I am changing .”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Create an animal that has never existed before.

Media:  Scrapbook paper, Magazine and Catalog photos, Matte medium

Time:   1H:10M

Comments:  This bird-like creature is made from pictures of glassware, tile mosaics, the upholstered back of a chair, and a wooden tree stump stool.  Fairly certain s/he's not existed before and might be a little weighty for flight. I approve the changes.

Day 118 A horse is a horse

118:365
01/26/13

Day 118 A horse is a horse
Louise Hay affirmation:   “I flow with the changes taking place in my life as best I can.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Make something out of wood.

Media:  Magazine photos, Matte medium

Time:  1H

Comments:  Loved the nostalgic charm of the hand-made wood toys in this collage.  Some show their age and seem to be frozen in a time before electronic toys were so prevalent in modern life.  While others are brand new creations that take inspiration from the past but are interpreted in a modern way.

Flowing with changes taking place in my life is a lot like this.  Sometimes personal change looks like a slow evolution, where the past is considered and the present is a newer version of an earlier me.

Day 117 Happy hour

117:365
01/25/13
Day 117 Happy hour

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I see the resistance patterns within me only as something else to release.  They have no power over me.  I am the Power in my world.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Go out of your way.  Travel somewhere you wouldn’t normally go today specifically to create something inspired by that location.

Media:  Magazine photos, Postcard, Vellum, Matte medium, Glue stick

Time:  55M

Comments:  My out of the way detour today was to go to happy hour with some commercial designer friends after work.  Conversation centered around work projects and coworker personalities.  Always enjoyable, and a fun time to get together with other designers.

Amazing to hear how gender in the workplace can still be an issue regardless of where we work... even after all the years since women entered the workforce in the US.  For me, resistance patterns that turn learning, sharing, networking and encouraging one another into gossip or grousing about work or the state of the world were in my conscious awareness as we talked.  It's too easy to slide to a negative and cynical place at times. "They have no power over me!"

On the drive home from Dallas, I thought about how each of us has been working in the field long enough to lead our own design consultancies, but still choose to work in corporate or design firm environments.  Old resistances around fear of the unknown in starting a design venture on my own, without the safety net of a steady paycheck, came up again.

Day 116 Thawed thoughts

116:365
01/24/13
Day 116 Thawed thoughts

Louise Hay affirmation:   “Thoughts no longer have any power over me.
I choose to be free.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Create something using an old map or something that ends up looking like a map.

Media:  Map from National Geographic, Magazine photos, Matte medium, Postage stamp

Time:  1H:10

Comments:  I enjoyed the contrast between the two chairs in this collage.  The one on ice represents how thoughts can freeze us or hold us prisoner; the other  represents freedom and stability with whimsy and style.  Has a bit of a tropical/nautical flair with the caning and coral back cushion that I liked for a collage with a map (travel) background.

Not to get too political, but I also liked the Cuban postage stamp.  It worked with both the color scheme, and the concept of people choosing to be free.

Day 115 Go Fish

115:365
01/23/13
Day 115   Go Fish

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I see and feel myself changing moment by moment.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Find or buy a kit of some sort, get rid of the instructions, and make something that’s not at all like the intended result.

Media:  Scrapbook paper, Postcard, Animal Planet Go Fish cards, Simplicity pattern tissue, Matte medium

Time:   1H:15M

Comments:  Used a set of Go Fish cards as my kit to be used not as intended.  Thought sharks and dolphins would communicate changes in form from moment to moment.

Ended up not liking the result much visually, so I added a layer of pattern tissue to tone things down.  The walrus was just for fun and rounded out the aquatic menagerie.

Day 114 The yeast also rises

114:365
Day 114 The yeast also rises
01/22/13

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I choose to react as though I have found a treasure where I discover something else to release.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Make something out of toast or bread.

Media:  Book pages, Magazine, Catalog, and Book photos, Matte medium, Glue stick, Tissue paper, Scrapbook paper

Time:  1H:30M

Comments:  Used to have a dog that loved bread more than anyone I've ever met.  Each slice, each loaf, each roll, each full birthday cake sneaked from the counter when no one was looking - a treasure.

The background paper of this collage is made up of poems and prose on the subject of grandmothers and mothers.  Have had both in mind over the last few days.  Some surprising thoughts and memories have risen that I've discovered a need to release.   No blame, no anger, no resentment - just treasure (like SlowMo found in his loaves of bread).

Day 113 The trouble with red

113:365
Day 113 The trouble with red
01/21/13

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I am teachable.  I can dream.  I am willing to change.  I choose to have fun doing this.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Paint the town red.  Work only with red materials today.

Media:  Tissue paper, Newsprint, Magazine and Calendar photos, Matte medium, Mod Podge, Sharpie

Time:   2H

Comments:  This collage took a lot longer than the results might indicate.  Tried several other techniques and subjects, but wasn't happy with any of them.  Finally re-read the affirmation line that said "I choose to have fun doing this" and remembered that dog-art is usually the way for me to go when I want to have fun.  Once I changed track, the final result came together quickly.  I'm willing to change, but focusing on what I enjoy is also a good thing.

Day 112 Watching dry paint

112:365
01/20/13
Day 112 Watching dry paint

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I now choose calmly and objectively to see my old patterns, and I am willing to make changes.”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Work with a few free paint swatch samples found at most hardware stores and use them to create something new.

Media:  Journal paper, Paint swatches, Magazine photos, Tissue paper, Tracing paper stencil, Vellum confetti, Cream chalk, Watercolor paint

Time:   2H:10M

Comments:  Enjoyed playing around with the bird theme on this collage.

Day 111 Right time and place for corn

111:365
01/19/13
Day 111 To corn or not to corn

Louise Hay affirmation:   “I am in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing.  All is well in my world .”

Inspiration exercise from 365 Daily Creativity Journal:   Make a facial expression on your plate from the leftovers of a meal today.

Media:  Scrapbook paper, Magazine photos, Calendar and Clip Art paper, Cream chalk, Matte medium

Time:   50M

Comments:  The imagery and affirmation in this collage remind me of my job.  Some days I'm fairly certain I'm in the right place.  Other days, I wonder.
